Bully (Calvados)
On the remarkable tympanum of the church of Saint-Martin is a scene which
has been crassly misinterpreted
as Daniel in the Lions' Den.
It is, however, a classic scene of punishment of sin, similar to many
on capitals on Romanesque churches
(e.g. Deyrançon,
Puypéroux). The
naked human figure is definitely a Luxuria figure, though doubtfully exhibitionist.
The legs completely outstretched to fit the tympanum recall the enigmatic
Luxuria figure on Muiredeach's Cross
at Monasterboice
in Ireland.
